This past October, Vancouver’s recently opened, Blackbird Public House and Oyster Bar, played host to the 2013 Angostura Bitters Canadian Cocktail Challenge. This challenge brings together Canada’s best mixologists to see who can concoct our country’s coolest and craziest drinks. Of course Day Jobs and the Nightlife was front row centre for the event and we soaked it all up!
Hundreds of beverage industry professionals and enthusiasts gathered to grab a cocktail or and watch Shane Mulvany, head bartender at Toronto’s The Chase walk away with the crown after shaking away the stiff competition with his Brian Lara Swizzle and Banana au Rum recipes. With only 7 minutes to prepare each arrangement, contestants were judged on taste, creativity and presentation. Mulvany won a cash prize of $5000.00 and a trip to Trinidad where he will represent Canada in the 2014 Global Cocktail Challenge! Not too shabby!
Vancouver bartender, Dale Styner took home the People’s Choice award for his smashing Smashed Apple Cocktail. Hats off to the night’s winners and I’m sure Shane will do us proud in 2014!
