Montreal’s Fitzroy is many different things. It’s a wildly decorated pool hall hangout, an awesome bar with great cocktails and a restaurant that serves up pretty fantastic food. It’s obvious that I liked the place (which surprised me a little) but you will need to see this it for yourself. Read on.
Fitzroy is perfectly located steps from both Mount-Royal métro and the busy corner of St-Denis and Mount-Royal Avenue. Sitting atop a drugstore, the location is pretty unassuming but a short jaunt up a flight of stairs and you’re immersed in a space that feels like the bar/restaurant equivalent of a cool music festival. The vibe is inspired by and meant to evoke an Australian beer garden. Designed by Amlyne Philips, the space is ethereal, airy and beyond cool. Fitzroy is reminiscent of her other works which include, l’Apt 200, Jatoba and Mayfair.
We gathered at Fitzroy a couple of weeks ago for their first annual garden party. Timed perfectly with the launch of their new summer menu, the media sampled some great new food and washed it all down with a selection of delightful cocktail (including my favourites, the Backside Splash and the Hotel California – you must try!) designed by Lawrence Picard of Nectar and Mixologie. The new menu consists of great burgers, tacos, amazing grilled cheese and smoked meat sandwiches, tartares and much more. It’s bar food but amped up with fresh seasonal ingredients and lots of flavour.
The garden party was a great way to experience le Fitzroy for the first time. I wrote up top that I was surprised I liked it. I completely judged the place by the exterior and that’s on me. Beauty is on the inside here at this wonderful place where you can hangout, play pool, eat, drink and chat it up, all in a pleasantly cool environment.
