We’ve all heard the saying “the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time”. The same philosophy can be applied to the transformation underway in Montreal’s Gay Village. With each cool new business that moves into the neighbourhood, people are returning to eat, drink, shop and party the night away. Kamehameha, a kitschy, Hawaiian tropics inspired eatery has opened in the heart of the Village and they have everything it takes to bring people of all ages into an area desperately in need of a few fresh faces along with the return of a few seasoned ones as well.
Instagramers looking for the next cool restaurant shot will love the décor which leans heavily (and almost literally) into the eighties. Think Golden Girls set in a snack shop; a show we would all undoubtedly binge watch.
At Kamehameha they serve Hawaiian inspired cuisine fresh bowls of poke, spam musubi and flavoured soft serve in signature fish-shaped cones. Spam is huge in Hawaii for some reason and I’m curious to see what Montreal’s reaction to having it on a menu will be. They also have delicious malasadas desserts and wonderful homemade smoothies.
It’s a bold choice for the Village but in this neighbourhood where bold choices are rewarded and celebrated and I’m sure Kamehameha will be a big hit. The Village is a place where big, bright and kitschy won’t just work, it will thrive and Kamehameha should be the challenge that the next bar or restaurant should rise to.
One restaurant at a time, that’s how you redefine the Village for a new generation and as we continue going bigger and brighter we are all looking for something a little different as well and Kamehameha certainly fits the bill.
