DJNL was on the scene last week at the VIP opening of EAST Pan-Asiatique, the beautiful new restaurant located in the lobby of the recently opened (and heavily buzzed about) Renaissance Hotel on the corner of Cathcart and Robert-Bourassa. The latest endeavour from the Satori Group (they first opened Satori in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu followed by Siam in Quartier Dix30), this is their first try with a restaurant in Montreal.
The idea behind the restaurants decor dates back to the 1930’s and is inspired by Old Shanghai, a city where Asian tradition married perfectly with Western modernity. The restaurant has a darkly lavish design with its walls covered in a deep red and sometimes patterned colour. Dark coloured wood and black patterned grating give a sense the restaurant a sense of intimacy. EAST has two distinct areas, a formal dining room in the back the of the restaurant and a more modern bar area towards the front.
Opening night was packed as you can imagine. Montrealers from all over the city clamoured to the restaurant, not letting a little snow stop us from being the first to see the new space. We enjoyed cocktails by Lawrence Picard, free flowing wine and bubbly to celebrate the unveiling of an outstanding hand-painted mural at the back of the restaurant. The artist was on-hand to sign the artwork, adding the final touch.
DJ Abeille provided her signature pop -infused soundtrack for the evening and a trio dancers delighted the crowd with a traditional and kaleidoscopic routine. Throughout the three-hour, canapés were served featuring samples of Montrealer’s would soon be enjoying at the restaurant.
We will be bringing you a full restaurant review in the coming weeks so check back again soon. For now, enjoy your first look at EAST.
